Professional Certification for ACHSM members

In 2019, the College has engaged with members about introducing a credentialing system and professional certification of health managers and leaders.

The results of the member survey survey sent to all members in May 2019 showed overwhelming support for the introduction of a two-tier certification – Certified Health Manager (for Associate Fellows) and Certified Health Executive (for Fellows).

At the 2019 ACHSM Asia-Pacific Congress at the Gold Coast, College President Dr Neale Fong took the opportunity to launch our new Strategic Plan and to formally announce the introduction of the College Certification Program for members. Please find below a copy of this presentation with a few Notes for additional information.

Right now, though, it is crucial that members consider what it may mean for them personally.

Changes from Dec 2020: key information for current members

  • Existing Associate Fellows as at 1 December 2020 will be deemed to be Certified Health Managers and be able to use the additional postnominals of CHM in addition to AFCHSM postnominals.
  • Existing Fellows as at 1 December 2020 will be deemed to be Certified Health Executives and be able to use the additional postnominals of CHE in addition to FCHSM postnominals.
  • This recognition will be subject to a 12-month confirmation period where CHM’s and CHE’s must undertake a number of hours of Continuing Professional Development and complete and lodge a self-assessment against the ACHSM Master Health Service Competency Framework.

The CPD Policy to support this and the ongoing maintenance of Certification is currently in development and we should be able to provide a draft to all members by end January 2020 for comment. If you are an Associate Fellow or Fellow we will provide you with an opportunity to opt out of the Certification.

Other important considerations

  • Do you have colleagues who might wish to join ACHSM in the coming months and be recognised for their current skills and competencies in December 2020?
  • Are you a Member who has enough points (12 points required) on our Membership Advancement and Scoring Form to progress to Associate Fellow before December 2020?
  • Are you a Member or Associate Fellow who has enough points (20 points required) on our Membership Advancement and Scoring Form to progress to Fellowship through the Fellowship Program in 2020. Applications for the 2020 program close on 29 November 2019.

The ACHSM Board firmly believes that health leadership and management is a profession requiring skills, ongoing development and support, but also, perhaps most importantly, recognition from the wider health sector of the profession itself.

Our aim in introducing a professional certification for members is to work alongside you, our most important stakeholders, to build that understanding and acceptance across the health sector. We aim to advocate for you and for the recognition of the health management profession and appreciate your ongoing support as we roll this program out over the next year.

We will continue to provide you with regular progress updates as the Certification Program takes shape over the next several months.
