Mentoring

Background
Mentoring is a professional relationship where a mentee and mentor are matched to share professional and personal skills and experiences, as well as enhance career development. Mentoring allows mentees to become familiar with a well-developed style of leadership and enables them to be guided while developing their own style. Mentoring can be provided in a range of ways and is agreed on a case by case basis between the mentor and mentee. Typically, it is a one-to-one relationship between a more experienced and less experienced professional and is generally provided for at least one hour per month.
ACHSM mentoring is founded on the use of encouragement, constructive comments, openness, mutual trust, respect and a willingness to learn and share. Mentoring is a valuable service for all health managers and executives. As a mentee you can benefit from the guidance and wisdom of a senior health leader. As a mentor, the Mentoring Program provides a valuable leadership experience and the satisfaction of helping an emerging leader with their career.
ACHSM Branches manage this program locally to ensure that all ACHSM members get equity of access to this important professional development activity.
Essential elements for applying as a mentee candidate
There are two essential requirements to be met. Candidates must:
- Be a financial member of the College.
- Complete the Mentee application form.
Submitting applications
Steps to apply for the mentoring program as a Mentee:
If you are not already a member of the college:
- STEP 1 – Join the College in the membership category that suits your level of experience and qualification. This will include completing the Membership Application Form and attaching a copy of your CV on to your profile.
- STEP 2 – Once you have joined and your membership fees have been paid, complete the Mentee application form
If you are already a member of the College:
- Please fill in the Mentee form online and click submit.

Mentors must complete the Mentor application form and provide a full CV.
Once we have received your application, your branch Mentoring coordinator will contact you regarding the next steps.

Mentoring roles and responsibilities
The mentee:
- To be a financial member of ACHSM for the membership year starting 1st April to 31st March.
- To complete the ACHSM Management Competency Assessment;
- To accept responsibility for my own decisions and actions;
- To ensure absolute confidentiality of matters discussed and information supplied by the Mentor;
- To discuss and seek prior approval with my Mentor if I would like to nominate them as a referee;
- To work with my Mentor to identify objectives from participation in the Mentoring Program and collaboratively develop a plan designed to address these objectives;
- To maintain regular contact with my Mentor (face to face meetings at least every 2 months if practicable);
- To keep a record of management experience obtained during the period so that full discussion can be undertaken with my Mentor;
- To initiate meetings and make regular contact with my Mentor;
- To carry out tasks and projects by agreed times;
- To review performance and progress with my Mentor;
- To promptly respond to requests for information from the Mentoring Coordinators and informing them of any changes in my contact details;
- To participate in the evaluation of the Mentoring Program; and
- To attend the Orientation session, where practical.
The mentor:
- To provide information, guidance, constructive comments and an empathic ear;
- To ensure absolute confidentiality of matters discussed and information supplied by the Mentee;
- To work with the Mentee to identify their objectives arising from participation in the Mentoring Program and to collaboratively develop a program to address these;
- To provide a confidential and personalised source of career advice, support and guidance to the Mentee;
- To provide the Mentee with advice and assistance in identifying personal development needs and how to address these;
- To assist the Mentee to establish a network of support within the health system;
- To assist the Mentee develop an understanding of the overall health system;
- To facilitate the Mentee’s professional growth;
- To meet face-to-face with the Mentee regularly (at least once every 2 months), and at short notice if possible in special situations and to maintain contact more frequently by telephone and e-mail, as agreed with the Mentee;
- To undertake reviews of the Mentee’s performance and progress at the request of the Mentee during the year;
- To participate in evaluation of the Mentoring Program; and
- To attend the Orientation session, where practical.
