To ensure that the Australian healthcare system is supported by the infrastructure required to adequately deliver its services, over the next 12 months over $7billion will be spent on capital works projects for new and existing health facilities.
For the people involved in overseeing or managing these projects, this can be a daunting and complicated task. In fact for many CEO’s, senior health executives and client representatives, the opportunity to participate in the planning and design (or re-design) of a major health facility may only occur once, or maybe twice in their career.
When asked to become involved in the planning and design of a new health facility, many health executives do not have access to a ready source of information available covering the standards, regulations, trends, feedback and research for the many specialty areas contained in a new hospital deaprtment.
The field of health facility planning and design is a rapidly advancing area with research available from around the world as well as a wealth of untapped practical experience available throughout Australasia.
To assist ACHSM members to contribute to this complex process, the College has established this Special Interest Group to act as an information broker and to create a network of people able to support those involved in undertaking a capital works project in the health field.
Purpose of this Special Interest Group;
To address the needs of all those involved in the planning and design of health facilities and the impact these facilities have on the delivery of healthcare services
To share research information and knowledge relating to the planning and design of health facilities both in Australia and overseas
In conjunction with the ACHSM Library, to act as a referral and resource base for College members participating in capital works projects
To develop and disseminate information pertaining to guidelines and standards and the latest trends and influences on the planning and design of health facilities
To encourage the pursuit of innovation and excellence in health facility planning and design
To encourage the undertaking of Post Occupancy Evaluation studies and contribute to the compilation of Evidence Based Design research studies
To advance the development of knowledge, skills and research in this field
This is a national multidisciplinary forum for members from a wide range of professional and technical backgrounds. If you are interested in participating in this Special Interest Group please email the chairperson

Working in partnership with the Australian Health Design Council, the College is seeking expressions of interest from health managers, health facility planners and designers who would like to take part in an international (UK and Europe) study tour looking at best practice in planning and designing a health facility. With Australia investing heavily in health-related infrastructure development, now is a good time to visit and discuss with our international colleagues facilities that demonstrate innovative models of service delivery, patient-centred design and procurement methods - especially in terms of what works (and doesn’t work).
Travelling with a small group (maximum 12 participants) of like-minded colleagues with similar focus and interests, this type of study tour activity is targeted and experiential.
The tour will include meetings and site visits in England, Norway and the Netherlands from 29 April to 10 May 2012. Sign up early and you could help shape the program with some specific input to the sites that we visit.
The reason for the date changes? we have been invited to be involved in an international project showcase event being run by the UK-based Architects for Health group (AfH) - http://www.architectsforhealth.com/ - scheduled tentatively for 10 May.
