Dr Paul Scown has been elected president of the Australian Healthcare & Hospital Association.  For other changes to the Board, please click here.  

Louise Sylvan has been appointed CEO of the Australian National Preventive Health Agency. ANPHA is a major element of the Government’s national health reform agenda.

Maxine Morand has been appointed the new CEO of Breast Cancer Network Australia, effective from 28 November 2011. Maxine is a former Victorian Minister for Women’s Affairs and Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development. Maxine’s background prior to entering Parliament in 2002 was in public health. Having trained as a nurse, she then undertook further university study leading to a role as a research scientist at the Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer at Cancer Council Victoria.

Professor Chris Baggoley has been appointed Australia’s Chief Medical Officer, beginning immediately. Professor Baggoley is a respected clinician and public health specialist with a national and international reputation in the field of emergency medicine. Previously Professor Baggoley was Chief Executive, Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care. More information.

Shane Solomon and Jim Birch have been appointed Chair and Deputy Chair of the Independent Hospuital Pricing Authority Tony Sherbon will be the first acting Chief Executive of the IHPA. Previously Tony has been the head of the South Australian and the ACT health departments, has also headed two area health services in New South Wales, and has worked in public hospitals as a medical administrator. Most recently, Tony was Deputy CEO of the National Health Reform Transition Office.

The new membership of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Equality Council has been announced. Professor Ian Anderson had been reappointed as Chair and Ms Tanya Hosch as Deputy Chair of the council, formerly called the National Indigenous Health Equality Council. The National Disability Insurance Scheme Advisory Group will help steer the development of a National Disability Insurance Scheme by providing advice on progress with the foundation reforms required to fundamentally improve the system of care and support for Australians with disability and their carers. The new appointees to the Advisory Group are Dr Ken Baker, Dr Lorna Hallahan, Ms Joan McKenna-Kerr, Mr Brendan O’Reilly and Ms Fran Vickery. The new appointees will join the Advisory Group Chairman Dr Jeff Harmer AO, Dr Rhonda Galbally AO and Mr Bruce Bonyhady AM.

Patricia Faulkner AO and John Walsh will be the Chair and Deputy Chair of the National Health Performance Authority after their appointments were approved by COAG in August.  Under their guidance, the NHPA will ensure that all Australians will be able to see how their public and private hospitals and Medicare Locals are performing. Legislation to establish the NHPA has passed the Senate.

Professor Allan Fels AO will chair the nation’s first National Mental Health Commission. The Commission will commence operation on 1 January 2012 and will be based in Sydney. The Commission will report to the Prime Minister and its first task will be to produce a National Report Card on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention in 2012. Professor Fels is best known as the former head of the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission. He is currently Dean of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG), Chairman of the Haven Foundation and a Patron and participant in numerous mental health organisations.

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, hasannounced the Chair and members of the National Lead Clinicians Group. Dr Russell Stitz AM RFD, a surgeon practising at the Wesley Hospital, Brisbane, will chair the Group which will provide advice to the Minister for Health and Ageing on priorities and strategies to improve patient care, promote evidence based clinical practices and assist with the prioritization and implementation of clinical standards. The National Rural Health Alliance has a new Chair, Lesley Barclay, Professor and Director of Sydney University's Lismore-based University Centre of Rural Health. Heather Wieland,  National President of the Country Women’s Association of Australia was elected Secretary and the new Treasurer is Nicole O’Reilly, an occupational therapist and Senior Manager Service Development within the Aged and Disability Program of the Northern Territory Department of Health. Other members of the new Board are optometrist Phil Anderton from Manilla; remote area nurse Sophie Heathcote from Dubbo; physiotherapist Rob Curry from Darwin; and rural GP Tim Kelly from Crystal Brook in South Australia.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia has announced the impending retirement of Dr Michael Tatchell, the Guild's National Director of Health Economics, after almost 27 years of service.  

Dr William (Bill) Coote has been appointed the Acting Director of the Professional Services Review. The PSR is an independent statutory authority that examines cases where health practitioners may have inappropriately rendered or initiated services that attract a Medicare Benefits Schedule rebate, or inappropriately prescribed under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

has moved from Director of Corporate Services, West Gippsland Healthcare Group to be General Manager, Division of Radiation Oncology & Cancer Imaging at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

Kevin Bate is now Deputy CEO and Director of Emergency and Medical Services for Ambulance Tasmania

Carol Bryant is now CEO, Macquarie University Hospital (NSW)

Kim Chant is now Australian Development Manager for Ramsay Healthcare.

Matthew Daly has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Tasmania. Matthew is currently Chief Operating Officer, Clinical Support Division, Southern NSW Health Service. Matthew will begin the position in mid-January and the Department of Premier and Cabinet deputy secretary Greg Johannes will fill in until then.

Athina Georgiou is now the CEO of The Queen Elizabeth Centre in Melbourne.

Graeme Head has been appointed inaugural Commissioner of the NSW Public Service Commission. Currently Graeme is Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.

Alison Jones is the new Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Wollongong

Mark Page is now CEO of Greenslopes Private Hospital (QLD)

Jerril Rechter has been appointed to the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation and will take up the role in October. Jerril is currently Executive Director of Leadership Victoria where she has led the organisation through the development and implementation of its strategic plan, new programs and has driven the innovation agenda of the organisation.

Mary Bonner was recently appointed as the CEO for Capital and Coast District Health Board. . Prior to this appointment Mary was General Manager Health Services at Waikato District Health Board

Dr Dale Bramley has been appointed CEO of Waitemata District Health Board

Dr Nick Chamberlain has been appointed to the position of CEO Northland District Health Board and will formally commence the position in October 2011

Dr John Crawshaw has been appointed Director of Mental Health, Ministry of Health. John is currently CEO Statewide and Mental Health Services in Tasmania. He will take up the appointment in early November.

Dr Don Mackie has taken up the position as the Ministry of Health’s Chief Medical Officer, and head of the Ministry’s recently established Clinical Leadership, Protection and Regulation Business Unit.

John Pine has been appointed General Manager, Human Resources for the Southern District Health Board. Previously John worked as the General Manager, Human Resources for Hawkes Bay DHB, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and ENZA/Turners and Growers.

John Simpson has been appointed Chief Information Officer for the Southern District Health Board. John joined Southern DHB in February 2008 as Regional Services and Technology Manager and has been Acting Chief Information Officer since August 2010.
