The Australian Health Design Council and the College invite health managers, health facility planners and designers to join us on this inaugural,  international (UK and Europe) study tour looking at best practice in planning and designing a health facility.  With Australia investing heavily in health-related infrastructure development, now is a good time to visit and discuss with our international colleagues facilities that demonstrate innovative models of service delivery, patient-centred design and procurement methods - especially in terms of what works (and doesn’t work).

Travelling with a small group (maximum 12 participants) of like-minded colleagues with similar focus and interests, this type of study tour activity is targeted and experiential.

The tour will include meetings and site visits in England, Norway and the Netherlands from 29 April to 10 May 2012. Sign up early to avoid disappointment!.

The program also involves an international project showcase event being run by the UK-based Architects for Health group (AfH) - http://www.architectsforhealth.com/ - on Thursday 10 May.

ACHSM Community Health Management :  Canadian and North American Study Tour

4-18 June 2011

Summary Report by John Turner, CEO, Bentleigh Bayside Community Health

In June, 13 Victorian senior community health managers embarked on a two- week study tour of Canada and US, organised by the Australasian College of Health Service Management.

In Los Angeles the group visited two services; one which provides a wide range of services to the large homeless population and the other which provides services to a very diverse multi cultural community.

The group then attended the annual Canadian Community Health Conference in Toronto and presented a two hour workshop on the Australian and Victorian primary health scene.

They visited two community health services in the inner suburbs of Toronto both dealing with vulnerable communities although one had a significant emphasis on drug and alcohol services and health services for sex workers.

From Toronto they spent two days in Edmonton Alberta hosted by the University of Alberta. On the first day they spent the morning at Alberta Health and Wellness and were briefed on the Primary Care Initiatives and future policy directions

In the afternoon they were hosted by Alberta Health where they presented on a range of projects including the electronic health record and chronic disease management.

On the second day they had a presentation from the University of Alberta on the community partnerships program.

They visited the Northeast Community Health Services which has a full blown 24/7 emergency department and finally the Edmonton North Primary Care Network which has some similarities to the Australian model of divisions of general practices.

The Study Tour cohort have produced a very comprehensive report on this educational tour with lots of practical commentary on translating the learnings back to their respective work places in Victoria.  It makes for a very interesting read - and highlights the contrasts and comparisons with the community health sector (and beyond) here and in Canada.
