HMIP Vic information and how to apply
Applications for 2024 are now closed. Applications for the 2025 HMIP will be opening on Friday 28 June.
The Health Management Program (Victoria) offers committed, high-potential applicants the opportunity to develop the skills, capabilities and knowledge required to begin a career in managing the challenges and complexities of health service delivery across Victoria. Throughout the two years of the program, Management Interns are given the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of different workplace and educational opportunities.
Program eligibility
To be eligible for this program, applicants must:
- Provide proof of Australian Citizenship, permanent Australian residency status or have permanent full work rights at the time of application.
- Hold a relevant undergraduate qualification and/or postgraduate qualification. A minimum of three years' work experience is desirable.
- Agree to undergo all required pre-employment health screening and checks, which includes but may not be limited to Working with Children Check, Aged Care Check, National Criminal Record Check, and Health Checks including COVID vaccinations required by placement organisations.

Stage 2: online application process
Applications for 2024 are now open.

Complete and submit the application form by Friday 25 August 2023, 11.59pm.
Please ensure you are available for the interview dates before applying.
Stage 3: group interview
All shortlisted applicants will be advised via email and/or telephone. The group interview will be a skills assessment and is required for those who are successful in their Stage 1 application.
The assessment is made up of a 2-3-hour session comprising two different tasks to assess your ability to critically think, problem solve, work in teams, prioritise information, analyse data and present information.
The assessment is planned to be in person in August in Melbourne. Panel members will comprise representatives from ACHSM and representatives from various healthcare backgrounds.
Before the interview, you are required to complete an online assessment in your own time. The assessment comprises 5 separate tests, each limited to 10 minutes.
Stage 4: individual interviews
The final stage of the selection process is an interview with a panel of individuals and will be 50 minutes in duration. The interviews will be held one week after the group interviews and planned to be held virtually via Zoom.
Interview schedules/location may change due to COVID-19 restrictions. Final details of the interviews will be sent to applicants who are successful in reaching each stage of the application process.
Stage 5: offers and commencement
Candidates will be emailed preliminary offers and asked to verbally accept. A formal contract will then be emailed for signing and return to ACHSM. If you accept the placement a one-off Program fee of $1200+GST is applicable.
An orientation day will be held mid-December 2023 and the Program will commence with orientation on Monday 8 January 2024.
ACHSM reserves the right not to appoint to the HMIP.
1st and 2nd Year Management Interns from Victoria
VIC 1st year interns
Benjamin Hooppell
1st Year Intern
Ben commenced the Health Management Internship Program in January 2023 and is completing his first placement at Barwon Health in their Strategy and Planning team. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Physiology) from The University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Paramedicine from Australian Catholic University.
He first developed his interest in public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. He worked as a team leader in the Contact Tracing Department, specialising in workplace management at the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services and found it an exciting new challenge for him. After moving on from this role to work as a Paramedic, he looks forward to returning to the Public Health environment through this program.
Cherlyn Ngan
1st Year Intern
Cherlyn is one of the 1st-year Health Service Management interns, currently undertaking her initial placement with Safer Care Victoria. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (Honours) from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Driven by a passion for continual learning and professional growth, she is currently pursuing a Master of Health Leadership and Management with the University of New South Wales.
With six and a half years of hands-on experience as a Physiotherapist in both Hong Kong and Melbourne, Cherlyn has honed her skills across various healthcare settings, including acute and rehabilitation hospitals, outpatient clinics, aged-care facilities, and community services. Her diverse experience enables her to comprehend the various settings and structures of healthcare systems in both cities and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams from different backgrounds.
Cherlyn’s decision to engage in the program arises from her enthusiasm to broaden her knowledge and acquire practical work experience. She aspires to view the healthcare system not only through a clinical lens but also from a management and leadership perspective. Additionally, she is keen on understanding how healthcare policies are drafted, reviewed, delivered, and modified over time. Her endeavor aligns with her overarching goal to contribute meaningfully to the enhancement of Victoria and Australia’s healthcare systems and services.
Jonathan Tay
1st Year Intern
Jonathan commenced the Health Management Internship Program in 2024, and will be undertaking his first placement with the Department of Health (Victoria).
He holds a Bachelor of Optometry from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate Certificate in Public Health. Prior to joining the Internship Program, Jonathan practised as a therapeutically endorsed Optometrist for several years in various settings, with roles in primary and tertiary clinical care, public health eye care, teaching clinics, as well as in ocular research.
Through the program, Jonathan aims to further his knowledge and understanding of the health sector, as well as develop invaluable health management and leadership skills. He is looking forward to the opportunities afforded by the program, and hopes to utilise the experiences gained to approach the health sector holistically in order to make a positive impact for the wider community.
Benjamin Van
1st Year Intern
Ben is embarking on this internship program with ACHSM, with multiple years of experience in an Allied health field. Ben is dedicated and committed to professional improvement and continuous learning and refinement. He holds a Masters of Chiropractic Science, a Graduate Diploma of Ergonomics, Health and Safety and currently completing a Masters of Health Leadership and Management. Ben has worked in various capacities such as private practice; assisting employees with rehabilitation, in Workers Compensation, completing investigative analysis and case management and has been a member of an OHS Committee. In addition, he has been the owner and Principal Chiropractor of a Chiropractic clinic for the past eight years. Ben is currently undertaking his first placement within the Strategy and Planning department at Western Health and aspires to make valuable contributions to the department’s vision and objectives.
Ben was nominated for a health sector leadership program (HSLP). Through the HSLP he was given the opportunity to meet with experienced health services senior managers, explore topics with fellow health professionals such as ethics and leadership qualities. It was a pivotal moment for Ben to further pursue opportunities which lead to the ACHSM program. Ben is eager to immerse himself in new challenges, absorb valuable insights, and contribute meaningfully to the dynamic landscapes of the healthcare sector.
Vic 2nd year interns
Leah Agustin
2nd Year Intern
Leah is a second-year Health Service Management Intern and is currently undertaking her third placement at Alfred Health.
She holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Chemical and Materials engineering from the University of Auckland. Over the last four years, prior to joining the program in 2023, Leah has undertaken a variety of roles in consulting, project management, process engineering and asset planning. Her experience to date has predominantly focused on the public health space, where she has contributed towards key water and wastewater projects across Aotearoa (New Zealand).
Through this program, Leah hopes to gain invaluable industry knowledge from passionate healthcare leaders, and successfully transition into a career in healthcare. She hopes to gain the necessary skills required to drive equitable and sustainable systemic changes for patients, healthcare workers and the wider community.
Kosta Katsaros
2nd Year Intern
Kosta is a second year Health Service Management Intern and is currently completing his third placement at Monash Health. He has a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) from La Trobe University and a Graduate Certificate of Pharmacy Practice from Monash University. Prior to joining the program, Kosta has worked as a hospital pharmacist, completing his internship at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and then working as a clinical pharmacist at Monash Health.
At Monash Health, Kosta completed the Society of Hospital Pharmacists Australia’s (SHPA) Foundation Residency Program, undertaking rotations in surgical & upper gastrointestinal, general medicine, dispensary, and coronary care. In completing the program, he published a research article in the Pharmacy GRIT journal titled ‘Analysis of an afterhours pharmacist on-call service. Do we need an extended hours service?”. After completing the program, Kosta was working as a hospital outreach medication review pharmacist, hospital in the home coordinator pharmacist, and in clinical trials.
Throughout the HMIP, Kosta hopes to broaden his knowledge of the health care system, and improve his skills in business literacy and change leadership. He has a passion for quality and safety and continuous improvement, where he hopes to gain further exposure to exciting health management projects to improve health outcomes for the population.
Jessica Lawless
2nd Year Intern
Jess is a second year Health Service Management Intern and is currently undertaking her third placement at Mercy Health. She has a Bachelor in Health Science and Masters in Physiotherapy Practice through La Trobe University. She has also recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management through Deakin University and is excited to take on the opportunity to further her study in completing a Master of Health Services Management at Griffith University.
Prior to joining the program, Jess worked as a physiotherapist for over 8 years in acute care across major public metropolitan hospitals in Victoria and in the NHS in London. She is excited to have the opportunity to gain practical healthcare management experience with the support of healthcare leaders over a range of placements in the industry. Through this program Jess hopes to broaden her healthcare experience and develop a range of skills relating to management, strategic planning, and leadership.
Ling Tan
2nd Year Intern
With a passion for health (and food), Ling studied a Bachelor (Honours) degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at Deakin University. After graduating, Ling worked in various roles within the health sector including clinical research, private consulting and health coaching. Ling spent the majority of her career practising as a dietitian at a community health service, where she provided a range of dietetics services to people who require nutrition assessment and interventions.
Never ceasing to learn, Ling joined the HMIP with the goal to further increase her knowledge of the Australian health system and to diversify her skillset, particularly in strategy planning, project management and operation. Ling aspires to be a leader in the health sector, one with compassion, integrity and unwavering commitment to improve health and wellbeing of the Australian people.
She is currently a second year Health Service Management Intern doing her third placement at VMIA – The Victorian Government’s insurer and risk advisor.
