NSW health manager leadership recognition awards 2023-34

Congratulations to the 2022 ACHSM NSW branch health management leadership recognition award recipients

The 2022 ACHSM NSW Branch Health Management Leadership Recognition Awards focused on recognising outstanding Health Management leadership for demonstrating a commitment to well-being.

Health manager and leader commitment to wellbeing is an Enabling Competency within the ACHSM Health Service Management Competency Framework. The College adopted the National Centre for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL) definition, whereby the health managers commitment to wellbeing means,

Establishes habits supporting well-being and creates a work climate supportive of the total health of oneself and others. This includes role modelling healthy habits and practices and monitoring internal and external environments for opportunities to improve health.

ACHSM NSW branch health management leadership recognition award recipient (well-being): Nina Holland

Job title: Manager Health Outcomes | Western NSW Local Health District

Nominated by a peer because: Nina has been an advocate of her team’s wellbeing. She has shown the importance of taking care our own selves first to be able to deliver the best for the community that we serve. She has been genuinely supportive and make a conscious effort to create a work climate that are physically and mentally healthy for everyone at our team.

ACHSM NSW branch health management leadership recognition award recipient (well-being): Tricia Cummins

Job title: Associate Director Clinical Innovation, Redesign and Consumer Engagement

Nominated by a peer because: Trish leads her team with empathy, using an adaptive model to focus on strengths, and enables individuals to manage the challenges that sit outside of their work to build resilience.

Trish is a strong collaborator and builds strategic relationships to enable transformation in the health system. She is passionate about equity and in particular enabling Aboriginal Health Teams to build the capacity to lead improvement and service redesign to improve healthcare experience and outcomes.

ACHSM NSW branch health management leadership recognition award recipient (well-being): Ann Dadich

Job title: Associate Professor | Western Sydney University

Nominated by a peer because: Ann is an outstanding health leader because she: mentors and supports junior colleagues, particularly clinicians and academics, promoting their wellbeing; positively role models practices that cultivate a healthy organisational culture – for instance, she focuses on what healthcare Managements and clinicians are proud of and what brings them joy and delight; and builds colleagues’ capacity by encouraging them to assume leadership roles. This is demonstrated by projects she has led to identify and promote pockets of brilliance within the health system. To redress the imbalanced focus on all that is wrong with healthcare, she works with clinicians and service managers to identify and raise the profile of individuals, teams, and services that exceed expectation.

In doing so, the wellbeing of those who deliver, manage, and receive healthcare was bolstered because positivity begets positivity. This was demonstrated in the context of palliative care, renal care, cancer care, paediatric care, and aged care. Furthermore, she has supported clinicians to develop research skills by working with them as co-researchers. Despite their limited research experience, they have presented research at key conferences and published their research via refereed academic journals. These examples collectively verify that Ann is a worthy recipient of this esteemed award.

ACHSM NSW branch health management leadership recognition award recipient (well-being): Debbie Draybi

Job title: A/ Principle Lead, System Safety Culture | Clinical Excellence Commission, NSW Health

Nominated by a peer because: Debbie has a deep commitment to wellbeing, as a senior manager within NSW Health she has been a role model and enabler of living your values, compassion and care for oneself and others. In 2022 she has demonstrated innovative leadership in producing and publishing a series of podcasts designed to support and strengthen psychological safety within the practices and culture of healthcare.

Furthermore, in observing the moral distress experienced by NSW Health managers and clinicians who are responsible for managing and leading system improvements generated from patient safety incident reporting and investigations, Debbie secured funding to design and develop training and tools to support system-wide engagement with reflective practice within the workplace and work practices. I personally have been inspired by Debbie and her work.

ACHSM NSW branch health management leadership recognition award recipient (well-being): Robyn Gasparotto

Job title: Midwifery Clinical Co-Director | Royal Hospital for Women, Randwick

Nominated by a peer because: In the past 12 months of me being new to the leadership position I have had the most amount of Support from my Clinical Co-Director than I have ever had from any other manager I have worked for. Robyn’s understanding of woman centred care, her eagerness to listen to everything everyone has to say irrespective of the multiple other things at hand she might have, and the time she makes for each and everyone, is outstanding. Her belief in my ability to perform difficult tasks, makes it easier for me to do my job as a manager of my area.
I have never, not once, felt like a question, comment, or point is not valid when I have discussed it with her. In the last year there have been many frustrated moments, angry times, and tears for me, which she has consistently dealt with head-on and empowered me through it for which I will be eternally grateful for. Robyn has taught me that a leader is someone who takes responsibility and accountability for finding the potential in us as Midwifery Managers and Midwives and expresses daily the courage and determination to develop us and our potential.

ACHSM NSW branch health management leadership recognition award recipient (well-being): Dr Nga Chong Lisa Cheng, PhD MBBS AFCHSM, CHM

Job title: President | Specialist Medical Services Group

Nominated by a peer because: Dr Lisa Cheng, PhD MBBS AFCHSM CHM, is the director and president of the Specialist Medical Services Group. Throughout the pandemic, she pays particular attention to ensuring all clinical staff and providers can provide essential clinical services to the local communities but not burn out due to the increasing demand for healthcare practitioners. Dr Cheng developed a support network among all the medical and nursing staff in the network. This network informs nurses and doctors of the latest government guidelines and policies on the COVID pandemic. It also creates a space for the nurses and doctors to share their views and express their feelings towards different aspects of life during this difficult time.

Dr Cheng also created a support safety net for any clinical staff who contracted COVID during this challenging time. Due to isolation requirements, this safety net team organised domestic goods and medicine delivery to those in need. Externally, Dr Cheng is the Advisory Committee Chair of the Australasian Medical Services Coalition (AMSC). She led and coordinated various supportive networking events for all health practitioners within the AMSC network to receive the latest education and relax through social activities between work and study.

ACHSM NSW branch health management leadership recognition award recipient (well-being): Dr Hassan Hosseinzadeh

Job title: Senior Lecturer | University of Wollongong

Nominated by a peer because: I want to nominate Dr Hassan Hosseinzadeh for being an influential Academic Program Director (APD) for the Master of Public Health (MPH) (2018-2022) at the University of Wollongong. His leadership style is truly transformational for health professionals. Given a large student cohort, navigating the MPH can be daunting. Here, he has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, combining emotional and intellectual competence while mobilising staff and leadership within the school of health and society; local and indigenous communities; local industries and governments; and professional bodies – to coalesce into a common purpose. Being innovative is his trademark.
He has shown that health professionals including students should feel empowered to counter the prevailing culture with creative flair to overcome challenges and benefit from opportunities. Otherwise, they are more likely to isolate their own sense of creativity from the business which neither benefits them nor the entities concerned. (e.g., “I am just a staff’). I have personally witnessed first-hand his dedication and commitment to his students, peers, and the program. We need more health leaders and academics like him who put the needs of their programs, students, and peers first. Indeed, he injects a healthy and outstanding dose of leadership that enhances the profession.

This communication system allows communication transversely between colleagues and vertically between different levels of management at any time.
